The city is recognized for its natural beauty, recreational and outdoor sports, and a lively and diverse cultural environment. Eugene's motto is "The World's Greatest City of the Arts and Outdoors. The Nike athletic shoe corporation had its start in Eugene, giving the city its nickname as "Track Town". Temperatures are mild year round, with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Eugene is home to the University of Oregon, founded in 1876, as well as Northwest Christian University, Lane Community College, Eugene Bible College, Gutenberg College, and Pacific University's Eugene Campus. The University of Oregon, local government and the Sacred Heart Medical Center are the city's largest employers.
